Mandatory military service is the conscription of all eligible citizens, usually those aged between 18-25, into military service for periods ranging from 1-3 years. In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, countries like Latvia have introduced mandatory military service for men, while other countries in close proximity to Russia (Estonia, Romania, Lithuania, Moldova, Poland) have considered doing so.

The National Hockey League (NHL) takes several measures to heavily equalize competitiveness between teams. The league has a "hard" salary cap, limiting the total amount that each team may spend on players. The cap is currently $83.5 million USD per year, and is set based on league revenues. The vast majority of players enter the league via a draft system; weaker teams get to pick higher in the draft. Draft picks may also be traded in exchange for players. Players must play for the team that drafted them (unless they are traded) for three years before becoming a restricted free agent (RFA). RFAs must negotiate a contract exclusively with their current team and thus hold little leverage. After 7 years in the league or upon reaching the age of 27, players become unrestricted free agents (UFA). A UFA may negotiate and sign with any NHL team.

China currently uses a system of household registration called the “hukou”. This system links an individual’s household registration to a specific municipality and prevents them from permanently settling outside of their home city. Migrant workers without a local hukou cannot access public education, most welfare benefits, and some other services in their new cities. Individuals can apply to transfer their hukou, but must generally meet strict conditions such as home ownership or qualified employment. Conditions to apply for a local hukou have become lower in smaller cities in recent years but remain high in mid-sized and larger cities. The Chinese Communist Party is China's ruling government; it is a (nominally) socialist, authoritarian party.

For the purposes of this debate, a 'kakistocratic court' is a court that determines whether politicians are fit to govern. These courts would operate similarly to, but outside of, existing legal systems. They would only have the power to strip individuals of the right to hold or run for office. They would not be able to issue any other punishments. These courts would not make judgments about an individual's character or competency, but rather would assess on the balance of probabilities whether individuals had committed acts that would disqualify them from the ability to govern. The list of these acts might include currently criminalised behaviour but could also include other acts that are not currently criminalised.

Squid Game is a game show where 456 contestants, all in desparate financial need, play successive rounds of "games". The winners progress to further rounds, while the losers are killed. Nobody can leave. The rounds continue until there is one survivor, who wins a $4.56 million prize and returns to normal life. You have survived thus far, and are among the final 38 contestants. You are told to team up with another contestant, and you pick your childhood best friend. You are locked in a room, provided with a set of cards and dice, and told to play a game of you and your partner's choice. You must begin play immediately without any discussion. You must finish the game with a winner within 30 minutes. The winner will advance, and the loser will be executed. If there is no winner before time ends, you will both die.
